CARE of Southeastern Michigan is looking for youth to participate in the Synar Compliance Project. The Synar Project was developed in the context of a growing body of evidence about the health problems related to tobacco use by youth, as well as evidence about the ease with which youth could purchase tobacco products through retail sources. To measure compliance within our vendors within Macomb County the youth inspector will enter the outlet, attempt to make a tobacco purchase, and record the results with a CARE staff member.

The youth will be separated into teams of two. Each youth will be assigned around ten (10) stores each. The youth will coordinate dates and times as they are available to go out and complete checks with a CARE staff member from June 1 - June 30, 2023. They will complete required documentation and reports under the funding source standards and CARE of SEM policy and procedures. The pay rate is $10.10 (current MI minimum wage) per hour and a $10.00 bonus per store.

All youth inspectors will be trained on areas of their role within the project. The youth inspector will always be accompanied by a CARE staff member throughout the entire process.

Responsibilities include:

  • Must be available to schedule dates/times during June 1 - 30, 2023
  • Must participate and complete Synar Training (10 hours of paid training time)
  • Follow safety protocols for conducting compliance checks
  • Must be comfortable conducting visits of randomly selected outlets that sell tobacco products, either over-the-counter or through vending machines for the purpose to attempt to make a tobacco purchase
  • Must be comfortable driving with a CARE staff member
  • Youth should be emotionally mature and confident entering stores to attempt to purchase cigarettes/vape products

All employees are expected to perform quality work within deadlines; exhibit professional conduct; work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments; work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating; coordinate work efforts with other employees and organizations; support the mission of CARE of Southeastern Michigan.
